Illustration and design opportunities for UO students

Hi all,

The Daily Emerald, UO’s student newspaper, is looking for illustrators, editorial cartoonists and designers to join our team in fall 2021! Individuals in these roles work with writers and editors to create accompanying illustrations or page layouts and/or create their own visual stories.

Apply here by August 29: https://airtable.com/shrw1TXFfRL4Gh1aJ

Who are we?

The Emerald is UO’s student-run, independent and award-winning weekly newspaper. We cover everything on the UO campus. Our weekly print editions and daily online content includes visual stories, multimedia stories, news, A&C, sports and opinion. You can find previous issues online (https://www.dailyemerald.com/) or on campus.

Why the Emerald?

The Emerald is completely run by students and is independent from the UO. We can report freely and independently. We win awards for our work every year, and our graduates have gone on to design, write, photograph and create awesome work for places like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Oregonian, NPR, OPB and others. Our reporting has even led to the creation of an Oregon law protecting journalists and their anonymous sources.

You don’t need to be in any particular department or have prior journalism experience to apply — we provide training, mentorship and community for aspiring journalists, producers and creators.

How do I apply?

Apply here by August 29: https://airtable.com/shrw1TXFfRL4Gh1aJ

We’re looking for students with a strong work ethic, a desire to learn and the drive to do incredible work. So if you’re short on experience, don’t worry. We’re looking for students with passion and commitment, not a perfectly polished résumé.

We also believe that good journalism can come from anywhere. Work from those of the most marginalized in society — including People of Color, women, people from low-income backgrounds, and LGBTQ+ people — is especially impactful and important. Hence, we strongly encourage people with these identities or who are members of other marginalized communities to apply.
